Rules

Drafternoon aims to bring the party to the table but there are a few rules to help things move along throughout the day.

Drafting

If this is your first draft welcome! this primer may help you out like many of the others who started here.

Each person will receive 3 packs of cards to draft and build a minimum 40 card deck including basic land.

Pack Pass Rotation

Left Right Left

If more than one set is being drafted the set with 2 packs will be passed first and second (ATQ – ATQ – ARN)

We have pre-sleeved basic land boxes so you only need to sleeve the cards you are playing. Once Drafternoon is over just de-sleeve those cards and put the sleeves and basics back in the box. There is also a box of red sleeved tokens available if your deck needs them.

*Don’t party past your limit before drafting even begins – you know who you are 😉

Tournament Structure

We use Challonge to create swiss rounds and score matches which are updated in real time on the front page during the event.

You will need to best your opponent two out of three matches to win the round.

Rounds are limited to 60 minutes to keep things moving along. Once 60 minutes has passed the current match will go into 5 turns and if a winner is not decided a draw will be given.

Keep your graveyard tidy, cards in sight, and have some fun.

Mulligans

Each game a player who is dissatisfied with their initial hand may take a mulligan. First, the starting player declares whether they will take a mulligan and then their opponent is given the option to do the same. Once each player has made a declaration, all players who decided to take mulligans do so at the same time.

Gentlepersons Mulligan
In the name of goodwill and friendly competition for the first mulligan of a match at Drafternoon players shuffle their opening hand back into their deck and draw a new hand of 7 cards.

London Mulligan
If a player decides to mulligan after their Gentlepersons Mulligan the London Mulligan will take effect – the player will shuffle their cards in hand back into their library, and draws a new hand of cards equal to their starting hand size, then put a number of those cards equal to the number of times that player has taken a london mulligan on the bottom of their library in any order. Once a player chooses not to take a mulligan, the remaining cards become that player’s opening hand, and that player may not take any further mulligans. This process is then repeated until no player takes a mulligan. A player can take mulligans until their opening hand would be zero cards.

Scoring

Round Win: 1 Point Match Win: 1 Point (Per) Tie: 0 Points Bye: 3 Points
Player Match 1 Match 2 Match 3 Total Points
Urza 1 0 1 3
Mishra 0 1 0 1
Karn BYE 3
Atog 1 0 Tie 1
Necratog 0 1 Tie 1

Byes

If there are an uneven number of players a bye will awarded to a player who does not have an opponent granting them 3 points. Round 1 byes will only be awarded to players who have not received a bye in the current season. Pairings will be randomly generated until a player with no byes is selected.

Tie Breaks

The pairing of swiss rounds is designed to ensure that each competitor plays opponents with a similar running score for each round until an overall winner is determined. As there are often players with the same total number of points after the last round we use the following 3 tie breaking methods to determine position.

Tie Break #1 Wins vs Tied Participants: This tie break looks at the match record between tied participants. For example, if Joven and Grandmother Sengir are tied based on statistics but Joven won when they played during the tournament, Joven wins the tie break. When more than 2 participants are tied, they’re ranked by the number of wins each one had against the others.

Tie Break #2 Game/Set Win%: Comparison of rounds won 2-0 vs. 2-1

Tie Break #3 Point Difference: Total matches won minus matches lost.

Player Match 1 Match 2 Match 3 Point Difference
Adun Oakenshield 1 0 1 1
Xira Arien 0 1 0 -1

Play Questions

We don’t have any official judges but your fellow drafters will gladly help out if you have a play related question. If they can’t resolve the question we will take it to Judge Chat for a final ruling.

Spoils of Battle

Aside from drinking from the Chalice of Victory and having their name etched in history alongside previous champions the winner gets first pick of prizes. This continues down the rankings until we run out. Prizes are supplied partly from previous Drafternoon proceeds and donation/sponsorship.

Top 8 Showdown

Drafternoon seasons run from October to September of the following year during this time player’s accumulate points through winning rounds, matches, and receiving byes. After each event The leaderboard on the main page updates listing the 8 player’s (or more if there is a tie) that have accumulated the most points. At the end of the season player’s listed in the Top 8 are invited to a special draft that will crown the season’s champion.
In the event of a tie for position in the Top 8 Showdown at season’s end a players Points Per Round (PPR) will be used to break the tie.

Voting

At the start of each season a voting via blackballing will take place to instate, ammend, or abolish rules and polices for the upcoming season by all those in attendance. Items to be voted on can be submitted up to the day before the new season begins via the form below.
